Ireland, China, the US, Russia to set up a joint scientific research centre
- July 24, 2021
China has agreed to establish a joint research centre for weather prediction, climate change and other environmental problems in the South China Sea, the European Union and the United States announced on Tuesday.
The EU and US agreed to a joint project to establish the Centre for Ocean Research and Information (COORI), which will be run by a joint committee led by a US-Chinese expert.
The move is the first step towards the establishment of the COORI, which has been criticised for failing to address the concerns of its European and US partners.
The joint COORi will work to develop, build and operate a centre that can develop and deploy an array of instruments to monitor and monitor global climate change, as well as other environmental issues such as biodiversity and air quality, said European Environment Commissioner Joaquin Almunia.
China has been conducting weather prediction and forecasting on the Chinese mainland, including in the region of the South and South China Seas, since 2011.
China’s weather prediction centre was set up in 2020 and was tasked with forecasting sea surface temperatures and other weather conditions.
The centre is expected to have a research staff of up to 200 scientists and engineers, and a staff of 20,000 scientists and specialists.
In 2020, China established a centre in the Philippines, which also has a large Chinese population.
